As a caregiver, you probably hear “Take care of yourself” all the time, but finding the time to actually do it often feels impossible. Caring for an aging loved one takes time, patience, and energy—especially if they’ve recently been discharged from the hospital and need more intensive care. Despite the demands, self-care is crucial for staying healthy and resilient. Here are a few practical ways to make self-care part of your daily routine, even with a full schedule.
1. Nap When They Nap
When your loved one rests, try to rest too. Lock the doors and set up a comfortable spot nearby—a cozy chair or a cot next to their bed will do. Yes, it’s tempting to catch up on other tasks while they sleep, but this is an opportunity for you to recharge. Make it a priority to rest when you can.
2. Snack When They Snack
Preparing snacks for your loved one? Make enough for yourself too. It’s easy to end up snacking on whatever’s convenient, but with a little planning, you can make these moments healthier. Try whole-grain crackers with cheese and apple slices, or small cups of soup with half a sandwich. Even pouring a glass of water with lemon in a nice glass can elevate the experience. Preparing healthy snacks for both of you adds nourishment and gives you a boost.
3. Take a 10-Minute Break
Set a timer for 10 minutes and take a breather. Fold some laundry or sort through the mail with your feet up. Put on a show you both enjoy, or try a cup of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. Add some deep breathing exercises while you’re sitting to help you relax, and don’t move until the timer goes off.
4. Get Fresh Air Daily
Regardless of the weather, take a few minutes to breathe in fresh air each day. If your loved one isn’t able to go outside, try opening a window. Bundle them up if needed, and let in the fresh air. Practice deep breathing exercises together—it’s rejuvenating for both the body and mind.
Caregivers give so much to others every day, which can make self-care seem unattainable. However, by finding small moments to care for yourself alongside your loved one, you’ll find it easier to sustain your energy and well-being.
